SUMMARY
Translating a novel is always difficult as it is impossible to convey all the nuances of the original work. If the source text is written in dialectal and colloquial language, at least to some extent, and deals with phenomena unknown to the target reader, it is even more difficult to translate it. Eyvind Johnson's Nu var det 1914 is such a book. As its setting is the Luleå- Boden area, where I come from, I was curious to see how the translator had managed to render the culture and language of Sweden and North Bothnia into English.
