SAMMANFATTNING
The aim of this essay is to find out if the sense of the original text is preserved in the Swedish translation of 'Things Fall Apart'. The author Chinua Achebe embraces the idea that any good story should have a message. One of the purposes with 'Things Fall Apart' was to present a complex African society to a Western audience who perceived African society as primitive and backward. Achebe uses a rich figurative language with a flavour of the Nigerian Igboland, and the many Igbo words in the text are explained in a glossary at the end of the book. The translator has been faithful to the text, and reproduces Achebe's figurative language in the same images as in the original text. However, he has omitted the useful glossary. Furthermore,a salient feature in the translation is the use of archaisms, unnecessary additions and somewhat stilted formulations.
